There’s one manual that focuses on modular technical docs (Highly rated, and I bought a copy after skimming it. But I confess I have yet to read it.)
Developing Quality Technical Information: A Handbook for Writers and Editors (2nd Edition)
Microsoft style manual is excellent for technical writing, especially when it comes to GUI apps.
Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications
This one was published by Sun. Not much different from the Microsoft manual. And where it differs, I tend to prefer the Microsoft approach. (They did a lot of user studies.)
Read Me First!Read Me First! A Style Guide for the Computer Industry (3rd Edition)
Joseph Williams’ book is fantastic. It uses style in the service of readability. For those who had senseless rules drummed into them by pedants, this is a must read. In particular, there is a great case for times when the passive voice is the right voice to use. (More coming under the heading, Bones of Contention)
Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace (10th Edition)
This one is hung up on excruciating typesetting detail, without particularly telling you how to write. Writers would be better off without it, imo.
